This photo was taken in the fall of 2012 when I was study abroad student in Florence, Italy. I was fortunate to have not only study abroad but also participate in a program that had been operating for decades. Our place of study and living was in a 15th century villa tucked in the Tuscan hills just outside of Florence. I remember walking around that big house on a hill for the first time, dumbfounded. The Villa was built in the 1490’s by a member of the Florentine clergy as a country home and it would later pass from family to family throughout the centuries until it was sold at a meager price by a former university professor to a school in Arkansas that had big dreams of widening its students’ horizons. While I was a student, I could hardly walk around without feeling connected to the thousands of other souls who have shared this space with me. It’s a rare thing to feel so connected to those who came before us. But it’s our job now to preserve the memory for those who come later.
